The Calcutta High Court has ordered that no business activities may resume at the fire-damaged premises of Delta Leather Corporation in Kolkata's Tiljala area until the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reaches a final decision in ongoing municipal proceedings.
According to the High Court petition, the ground floor of the building was being used by Delta Leather Corporation, a partnership firm engaged in leather goods manufacturing, when a fire broke out on May 12, 2026. The blaze claimed the lives of two workers and injured three others.
The court’s latest order follows a petition from the property’s residents, who argued that KMC had initiated action against the building without first issuing the statutory notices required under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act. Earlier, the court directed both parties to maintain the status quo, prohibited repairs or restoration work, and allowed only the removal of dangerous sections in consultation with civic authorities.
Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury ruled that it would be appropriate for KMC to complete its statutory process before any further action is taken. As a result, no business can operate from the premises until KMC and its Special Officer (Building) issue a final decision.
The court also reiterated that tanneries are not permitted to operate in the area and noted that no statutory approvals from the Pollution Control Board, fire authorities or other competent agencies had been presented during the proceedings. KMC has been directed to conclude the municipal proceedings as quickly as possible, preferably within six weeks.
