France's leather industry experienced a further contraction in raw hide collection and livestock availability during 2025, according to the latest 2025 Activities Monograph of the Leather Industries, published by the Alliance France Cuir Economic Observatory.

The report says the number of French raw hide collectors fell from 74 to 73 in 2025, while sector turnover declined by 4% year-on-year to approximately €259 million. Export value also decreased to approximately €197.5 million, although exports continued to exceed imports. Average employment in the sector stood at 492 people.

The study also highlights continued declines in France’s livestock population. As of November 2025, cattle, calves, sheep and pigs were all down compared with the previous year, while controlled slaughter numbers also fell for cattle (-2.6%), calves (-8.5%), sheep (-5.8%) and goats (-5.0%). Pig slaughter was the only major category to increase slightly, rising 0.2%.

According to the report, companies involved in the collection and wholesale of raw hides remain closely tied to conditions in both the agricultural sector and domestic and international leather markets, making them particularly sensitive to fluctuations in livestock production and market demand.
