The British luxury group has formalised its partnership with Leeds Beckett University and its BA Fashion Design course to demonstrate its commitment to nurturing emerging talent
Following the success of the 2024 pilot programme, Burberry and Leeds Beckett University are formalising their growing partnership. United by their shared Yorkshire roots, including the group’s Leeds office and manufacturing sites in Castleford and Keighley, the partnership blends creative talent development with a legacy of craftsmanship and regional investment.
“Through our partnership with Leeds Beckett University, we are creating opportunities for emerging designers to develop their skills, gain industry experience and build meaningful connections with the luxury fashion industry. By investing in local talent today, we are helping to strengthen the future of British craftsmanship, manufacturing and creativity for years to come”, said Alexandra McCauley, Chief People Officer of Burberry.
This initiative supports students throughout their degree. In the second year, they are given a live Burberry design brief to reimagine the iconic trench coat using surplus gabardine. They then progress to mentorship, portfolio reviews and industry feedback in the final year. Outstanding students are recognised along the way with work experience, awards and paid internships, creating a clear pathway from education into the fashion industry.
“By responding to a live brief inspired by the Burberry trench coat, students are challenged to develop their own design voice while gaining insight into the craftsmanship, heritage and innovation that underpin the fashion industry. Experiences like this play an important role in preparing the next generation of creative talent for their future careers”, highlighted Sam Hudson-Miles, Course Director for BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Leeds Beckett University.
