The appointment took effect on June 9, 2026, following a vote by CEN national member bodies. It will run until June 2032.
Defeo succeeds Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano and will oversee the development and revision of European standards covering leather nomenclature, testing methods and leather chemicals. The committee’s work supports consumer protection, environmental compliance and trade across the European leather industry.
A leather chemist with more than 40 years’ experience in research, testing and standardisation, Defeo currently chairs several European and international leather testing groups. During his term, he aims to modernise existing standards, strengthen cooperation with ISO, expand collaboration on bio-based products and increase engagement with industry and regulatory stakeholders.
