The Erasmus+ funded VETting Green project concluded in March 2026 after more than two years of work addressing greenwashing in the footwear and apparel sectors.
The initiative brought together industry stakeholders, vocational education and training (VET) providers, technology centres and consumer representatives from Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Italy and Greece. It was launched in response to low consumer awareness of misleading environmental claims and aligns with upcoming EU legislation on empowering consumers for the green transition, due to take effect in September 2026.
Central to the project is a multilingual online training programme designed for producers, workers, students and consumers. The course features six interactive modules, including quizzes and augmented reality elements, aimed at helping users identify misleading sustainability claims and make informed decisions. A self-assessment tool allows participants to evaluate their knowledge before starting the programme.
The project has also produced a policy report outlining key EU sustainability legislation relevant to the sector, alongside a practical roadmap to support implementation of more transparent and responsible practices.
Carmen Arias, Secretary General at the European Footwear Confederation, said the resources translate complex EU policies into practical guidance, helping businesses adapt to regulatory changes while promoting more informed decision-making and awareness of circular economy principles.
The training programme has been piloted across Europe, with final events now being organised to present the project’s outcomes.
