Ecco Leather has confirmed that its tannery operations in Dongen, the Netherlands, will not resume following the fire that destroyed the site in May 2025.
In a statement provided to ILM, the company said that the destructive fire at Ecco Leather’s tannery in the Netherlands prompted a comprehensive evaluation of the future of the site. This event became a catalyst for rethinking how the company could build a stronger, more sustainable leather operation moving forward.
In conclusion, Ecco Leather’s operations in Dongen will discontinue. Ecco Leather will continue to develop and deliver premium leathers to both Ecco and selected customers from its tanneries in Asia.
As previously reported by ILM, the fire broke out at the Dongen facility on the night of May 4–5, 2025, causing extensive damage to the site. At the time, the company confirmed that no injuries had occurred.
Subsequent reporting indicated that the tannery would remain closed while Ecco Leather assessed the future of the site. The latest statement confirms that operations will now be permanently discontinued, with the company set to continue supplying leather from its existing tannery network in Asia.
The decision marks a shift in Ecco Leather’s production footprint.
