An official confirmed on August 4 that efforts are underway to cushion the impact of the
newly announced 25% import duty, set to take effect from August 7.
President Trump’s latest tariff move has raised concerns among Indian exporters, particularly those in leather, chemicals and other sectors, who fear losing competitiveness against nations like Bangladesh, Vietnam and Thailand, which face significantly lower duties.
In response, the Ministry of Commerce has held consultations with representatives from affected sectors.
Exporters are calling for a range of support measures, including financial aid, affordable credit, timely release of export incentives and an extension of schemes like RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) and RoSCTL (Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies).
They have also requested the establishment of a direct shipping line to the U.S. to reduce logistics costs and improve delivery timelines.
