Twenty-five tannery owners in Jajmau, Kanpur, have been issued notices by the Regional Pollution Control Board after wastewater samples from their facilities failed to meet environmental standards.
Laboratory tests found chromium levels in discharged wastewater were almost three times above the permitted limit. Inspectors also found ineffective Total Suspended Solids (TC+SS) control systems at several units, indicating untreated wastewater was being released.
The regional office has submitted a report to the State Pollution Control Board for further action. Over the past week, notices have been issued to 44 tanneries in total, while earlier inspections also identified seven tanneries operating without the required consent.
According to Regional Pollution Control Board Officer Ajit Suman, inspections carried out over the past seven days found 274 tanneries operating in Jajmau, with six self-closed, 20 non-operational and 47 dismantled. Officials also reported that several low-capacity tanneries appeared to be producing beyond their approved capacity, based on excess raw material stocks, finished goods and workforce levels.
