The government of Tamil Nadu is moving forward with a series of initiatives aimed at improving environmental compliance and infrastructure across the state's leather sector.
Among the key projects is a proposed zero-solid-waste Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for the Ranipet leather cluster, one of India’s largest leather manufacturing hubs. The development forms part of broader efforts to strengthen waste management, environmental performance and operational efficiency within the industry. Just under a year ago, the Supreme Court issued a stern warning to Tamil Nadu authorities over the continued pollution of the Palar River by untreated tannery effluents.
The measures also include infrastructure upgrades for leather parks and industrial clusters, with the aim of supporting sustainable growth and enhancing the sector’s competitiveness.
Industry stakeholders hope that continued investment in treatment facilities and environmental compliance will help maintain access to international markets while addressing increasingly stringent sustainability requirements.
