The Punjab government has launched a province-wide crackdown on factories operating illegally in residential areas as part of efforts to tackle pollution and environmental violations.
According to Dunya News, the campaign, led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is targeting unauthorised industrial units including leather processing facilities and slaughterhouses.
One of the first enforcement actions took place in Chiniot, where authorities demolished an illegal leather processing unit following complaints from residents about odours and potential health risks, according to Dawn.
According to Dunya News, Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said industrial activity would not be permitted in residential zones and warned that further action would be taken against businesses violating environmental regulations.
The operation builds on previous efforts to remove hazardous industries from residential districts. According to The Express Tribune, authorities have long cited environmental, safety and urban planning concerns linked to factories operating in residential neighbourhoods.
Officials said inspections and enforcement actions will continue across Punjab in the coming weeks.
