Authorities in Kolkata have arrested the owners of a leather unit in the Tiljala area following a fire that killed two people and injured several others, while the building has been demolished after officials found it lacked sanctioned plans and basic fire safety measures.
According to reporting by The Hindu, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said a probe found the premises had no approved building plan and inadequate fire and electrical safety, prompting orders for its demolition and the permanent disconnection of electricity supply to the site.
The fire broke out on the first floor of the building during the afternoon of May 26 and spread rapidly through the premises. The Times of India reported that the victims were workers at a leather goods unit in Tiljala, while police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and detained those linked to the factory’s operation.
The incident has prompted wider scrutiny of leather workshops and small manufacturing units operating in Kolkata’s Tiljala–Topsia area. According to The New Indian Express, authorities announced a broader crackdown on unauthorised industrial premises following the fire, including directions to disconnect power to illegal factories in nearby areas.
The Tiljala fire occurred within months of a fatal warehouse fire in Anandapur in January 2026, which also raised concerns about fire licensing, building approvals and enforcement failures in Kolkata, according to reporting by The Hindu.
