Gucci, part of the Kering group, is focusing heavily on the leather industry through this new lab in San Miniato, Tuscany. The centre works on both improving traditional leather processes and developing alternative materials.

The aim is to gain full control over sustainability while maintaining product quality.

“The ambition is to shape a tannery model of the future capable of processing leather plus new materials, increasing quality, versatility & also being more efficient, more sustainable & more circular. When you do that you tackle climate change, water consumption & water pollution.”
– Marie-Claire Daveu, Chief Sustainability Officer, Kering

Before its official launch in 2024, it was in this lab that Gucci developed Demetra, Gucci’s leather alternative introduced in 2021.

Another key focus is reducing waste through the scrap less initiative. Gucci is cutting leather skins and hides earlier in the finishing process so leftover material can be reused as fertilizer.

The company is also using AI to detect defects in skins and hides early, helping avoid unnecessary waste.

These steps align with Kering’s target to cut its absolute emissions by 40% by 2035.
