Italy's footwear industry recorded a weaker start to 2026, with exports falling 1.6% in value during the first quarter, according to Assocalzaturifici, the Italian footwear manufacturers' association.

Assocalzaturifici said the sector generated approximately €3 billion in export revenue between January and March, while overall turnover declined by 2.7% compared with the same period in 2025. The association attributed the results to a challenging trading environment, citing geopolitical tensions, rising raw material and energy costs, and continued uncertainty across international markets.

Despite the export slowdown, Assocalzaturifici reported more positive signs in the domestic market. Italian consumer spending on footwear increased by 1.7% year-on-year during the first three months of 2026 to nearly €1.3 billion, suggesting domestic demand is showing greater resilience than overseas markets.

The association said it remains cautious about the outlook for the remainder of the year as manufacturers continue to navigate economic uncertainty and geopolitical pressures.
