  • Sweden proposes PFAS ban ahead of EU measures

    2026-07-28

Sweden’s ministry of climate and enterprise has proposed a national ban on the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in many consumer products.

The ministry said its aim was to put a ban in place in Sweden before European Union-wide restrictions come into effect. The Swedish ministry said it would take some time to convert its proposal into legislation, but insisted a ban could be in place in Sweden before the end of 2028.

Clothing and footwear would be among the products to which the ban would apply, the ministry explained, as would products that consumers can buy to apply weather protection to shoes and clothes they own already.

It said there would be possible exemptions for second-hand clothes or products containing a sufficient volume of recycled materials.
