While the fashion industry’s goal is to respond to the climate crisis, in line with the bioeconomy objectives defined by the EU and UN, it cannot ignore bio-based materials. Starting with leather, the biological and renewable material par excellence. UNIC – Italian Tanners and the ICEC certification institute participated in the final event of Monitor for Circular Fashion 2025 on February 26. The project, promoted by the SDA Bocconi Sustainability Lab, is a “multi-stakeholder” initiative. Participants include representatives of the supply chain, such as UNIC and ICEC, but also brands, solutions’ providers, and consulting firms, together with institutions. Which ones? The European Commission (DG GROW), MASE (Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security), and MIMIT (Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy).

    The importance of bio-based materials

There is nothing better than a practical example to illustrate the value of biobased materials, such as those used by Ferragamo, RadiciGroup, Conceria Antiba, ICEC, and UNIC, to create the Nova Bag model. “The fundamental characteristic of biobased materials”, explained UNIC at the meeting (in photo), “is the biogenic carbon neutrality they contain. Unlike fossil fuels, the disposal of bio-based materials does not release new CO2 into the atmosphere. Choosing bio-based materials means ensuring the balance that nature has already established. To encourage low-impact consumption, transparency and traceability are essential”.

    The project’s objectives

The Monitor for Circular Fashion aims to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) for circularity in the fashion industry, highlight and disseminate good corporate practices in this regard, and promote technical, managerial, and scientific skills for sustainable business models. In the 2025 edition, the project focused on sustainable inputs, durability, and end-of-life, strategic pillars with the greatest growth potential. Particular attention was paid to the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and Artificial Intelligence. The proceedings on February 26 provided an opportunity to present the Joint Position Paper, already submitted to European policy makers in April 2025 in Brussels, with recommendations on eco-design, waste management, social impact, and the role of technologies.
