Spanish tanning in 2025 ends as it began: badly
The only positive signs in the tables covering January–November 2025 for the Spanish tanning industry concern the import–export of semi-processed materials. Beyond that, based on data from the Customs Agency, the
trade magazine LederPiel concludes that — barring any surprises in December — the year will be recorded as “disastrous” for the Iberian leather supply chain.
Spanish tanning in 2025
Looking at the figures for the first eleven months of 2025, exports of Spanish raw hides fell by 12.9% year on year, while exports of finished leather declined by 2.9%. Over the same period, the only positive note — once again — came from semi-processed leather, which grew by 18.8%. Overall, however, the balance remains negative.
Export turnover from raw and finished leather (around EUR 460 million in total) fell by EUR 25.2 million, while that of semi-processed materials (approximately EUR 59 million) increased by EUR 9.3 million. A similar pattern can be seen on the import side, notes LederPiel: Spanish tanneries purchased fewer raw hides (-1.7%) and finished leather (-2.6%) from abroad, but increased imports of semi-processed leather by 14.2%.
