Recent local reporting has confirmed that wage negotiations in South Africa’s tanning sector remain unresolved, with no final agreement reached between employers and unions.
The update follows
ILM’s earlier update that the tanning sector was the only one of the three sectors covered by the National Bargaining Council of the Leather Industry (NBCLI) yet to conclude its 2026 wage negotiations.
There has also been no further update on a planned meeting between the NBCLI Commissioner, the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) and the South African Tanning Employers’ Organisation (SATEO) to discuss picketing rules.
However, Gert Kruger, Managing Director of Mossop-Western Leathers, said it was “premature” to suggest that a strike would take place. “Employers and SACTWU representatives have several points to still discuss and agree upon,” Kruger said.
According to S&V Weekly, he added that an agreement with the National Union of Leather & Allied Workers (NULAW) had already been concluded.
The General Goods & Handbags and Footwear sectors have already agreed to 5% wage increases, leaving tanning as the outstanding sector in the current negotiations.
