Brazilian tannery Viposa has become the first industrial facility in the country to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the highest level of the internationally recognised green building rating system.
The Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) member’s facility in Nova Andradina, Mato Grosso do Sul, also achieved the highest score ever recorded in Brazil in the LEED Operations and Maintenance (O+M) category for industrial buildings. The category evaluates the environmental performance of buildings in areas including energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, waste management and innovation, as well as how facilities are managed and operated on a day-to-day basis.

According to Viposa, planning for the facility began in 2020 with sustainability integrated into its design. Features include natural lighting and ventilation, infrastructure for electric vehicles and initiatives to reduce resource consumption.

CICB welcomed the achievement, saying it demonstrates how the Brazilian leather industry continues to invest in innovation, efficiency and sustainability.

Viposa said the certification reflects its commitment to combining more than 70 years of experience in the leather industry with a forward-looking approach focused on efficiency, innovation and sustainable growth.
