The South African tanning sector remains the only one of the three sectors under the National Bargaining Council of the Leather Industry (NBCLI) yet to conclude this year's wage negotiations.
According to NBCLI General Secretary and Principal Officer Ilhaam Ryneveld, the commissioner is “awaiting feedback from the parties regarding a draft settlement”.
As reported by S&V African Leather magazine, the General Goods & Handbags Sector and the Footwear Sector have both already agreed to 5% wage increases, with the footwear agreement reached at the beginning of July and the General Goods & Handbags Sector settling in June.
At the time of writing (July 22), there have been no further public updates from the NBCLI, the South African Tanning Employers’ Organisation or other industry sources confirming that a settlement has since been reached. Negotiations therefore appear to remain ongoing. More as it happens.
