Bangladesh TCLP leather traceability policy launched in Dhaka

A policy launch event for the LeatherTrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) project was recently held in Dhaka.

The initiative is being implemented by iDEA TREE in partnership with SERA Bangladesh, University of Northampton, Aston University, University of Hertfordshire and the Sustainable Leather Foundation, with support from FCDO and UNCTAD.

Md Abdur Rahim Khan, acting secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, attended as chief guest, alongside representatives from the Bangladesh Tanners Association, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association and Footwear Leather Goods and Accessories Exporter Association.

A policy brief titled A Strategic Roadmap for Enhancing the Adoption of Digital Traceability in Bangladesh's Leather Sector was presented by Dr Ebenezer Laryea of Aston University and Deborah Taylor of the Sustainable Leather Foundation.

The brief outlined steps to expand digital traceability systems across the industry.

Speakers highlighted sustainability, circular production and stronger global supply chain compliance. The event concluded with remarks noting project outputs including baseline research, a carbon calculator and life cycle assessment work.
