The on-site installation comprises 4,348 solar panels spread across 33,000 sq m and can generate up to 3.0 MW of electricity, which is enough to power around 750 homes annually. Over the course of a year, the system is expected to supply an average of 24% of the tannery’s electrical demand, providing private-wire, self-generated, zero-impact power to SLG

The solar array, located south of SLG’s Thermal Energy Plant, is the latest investment in the group’s long-term sustainability strategy, which spans more than two decades and includes multi-million-pound commitments to low-impact manufacturing. It comes as Bridge of Weir Leather marks its 120th anniversary in 2025 and Muirhead celebrates 185 years, underscoring SLG’s combination of heritage manufacturing and future-focused environmental innovation.

SLG is on track to achieve net-zero manufacturing emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by the end of 2025: a target set in 2018 and around 20 years ahead of Scotland’s national ambitions. The group says it produces the world’s lowest carbon intensity leather, with an independently verified average footprint of 8 kg CO₂e/sq m, without the use of carbon offsetting.

Dr Warren Bowden, Head of Innovation and Sustainability at Scottish Leather Group, said: “With our new Solar PV array, we are taking a step forward in the self-generation of on-site clean power, removing grid reliance, which further supports us as we rapidly accelerate towards achieving our target of 100% zero greenhouse gas emissions for our operations.”
