Tannery group PrimeAsia has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term, long-term and Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) emissions reduction targets.

This marks a major milestone in the company’s sustainability strategy, including Primeasia’s climate commitments with the latest IPCC science, the global +1.5°C pathway and the Paris Agreement, and its pledge to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain by 2050.

The SBTi, a collaboration between CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF, independently assesses and validates corporate climate targets in line with climate science.

Under the approved targets, Primeasia commits to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 63% by 2035 and 90% by 2050 from a 2024 base year, while cutting Scope 3 emissions by 38% in the near term and 90% by mid-century. The company has also set ambitious FLAG targets, including a 45.5% reduction in Scope 3 FLAG emissions by 2035, a no-deforestation commitment by December 31, 2025, and a 72% reduction in FLAG emissions by 2050.

Primeasia is among the first tanneries globally to set SBTi-approved targets, building on a 20-year track record in sustainability that began in 2005 when it became a founding member of the Leather Working Group. The company said it will now develop and implement a detailed greenhouse gas reduction roadmap and will report progress annually.
